Individual storyboard
The purpose of a storyboard is to be able to plan what is going to happen in the film and it is the best way to share your ideas with the rest of the production teams. A storyboard also saves time and makes the production much easier for everyone. I made a individual planning storyboard so that i could share my ideas with others so they could easily and quickly understand it and be able to put their input in and make it the best sequence. I then will be making a group storyboard that all the members of the group agree to base the narrative on. With all our own individual storyboards we can mix them up in a more organised way and come up with a group narrative quicker including ideas from all of our storyboards.
In my individual storyboard planning i have including 20 frame shots which show a girl waking up and seeing a dead body on the floor and notices she is tied up. She eventually escapes and comes across the victim in the shadows and starts screaming however when she turns around the killer stands in front of her with a bloody knife. Flashbacks then occur to her being at home on her laptop when she sees a embarrassing video of herself and suddenly receiver anonymous threat messages from somebody. She then sees photos of herself which triggers flashbacks back to when she was hostage then sees a phone on the floor with the same threat messages. She finally sees a photo of herself circled that the killer has targeted and then comes back to reality and the killer is not in front of her anymore. She then walks towards the door to escape and the killer killer is at the front and goes forwards to stab her then the scene blacks out before he does harm her.
Throughout my whole storyboard i have included Mise-en-scene techniques, for example;low key lighting even in the flashback bits to her being in her bedroom relaxing. I included this throughout so that it causes tension and creates suspense for the audience so they would be engaged the whole time from the dark and spooky settings and so that they would expect something thrilling to happen the whole time. This would mean that they would be enticed into watching the whole film and finding out what would be happening next. I also used point of view and over shoulder shot a few times throughout my storyboard. I used these two shots as they are used to show the audience the same image as the character within the film. This would mean that the audience would be more engaged in the film and want to find out what more would happen as they would feel like they are in the characters shoes and understand what is happening from the characters point of view more clearly. This would build a relationship between the audience and the characters and would make the audience react more and be more sympathetic when something bad or dangerous happens to the victim as they would care for her and want her to be safe and survive when the antagonist tries to harm her. The location in most of the opening sequence will be in a isolated location. This would show the audience that no one is around and the place is very dangerous as anything can happen to the victim and no one would hear or know about it. This would frighten the audience more as the setting is isolated however is still a house so makes it very realistic for the audience as they all obviously live in a house and can imagine something like that happening in to them in a location like that. Mostly throughout the film tense music and tense sounds will be playing to engage the audience and keep them on edge waiting for more to happen. This will build up suspense so when something does happen it will shock and surprise the audience more making the experience of watching a thriller film more scary and enjoyable for them. The different types of mise-en-scene i decided to use will make the audience feel as they are in more of a sinister atmosphere which will engage them and make them on edge waiting to see if the antagonist pops out of the dark ready to strike the victim and put her life in danger, which the audience would not like to see as they feel sympathetic towards the victim and want her to survive.
I also used Mise-en-scene for my inspiration of the setting being in a isolated spooky house was taken from the thriller film, Halloween. This inspired me as the setting is realistic so it would make the audience feel as they are involved in the narrative more. The fact that the girl would be in a house that is all damaged would clearly show the audience that she is in danger and may be hurt so when the flashbacks occur it would show a perfectly sage and normal bedroom which would makes the audience understand clearly that it is a flashback and the girl is now in danger remembering things before she got hurt. This setting will start the audience off feeling scared and enticed as they want to know how the victim will try to escape as nothing is around to help her and keep her out of danger and out of the hands of the psychotic antagonist.
I used cinematography for my inspiration of using a reaction shot was taken from the thriller film, Psycho. This shot showed the audience the facial expression of the characters. This shot would entice the audience more into feeling more sympathetic for the victim and helps the them understand how the character is feeling more clearly. The reaction shot helps the audience follow the narrative more as they feel sympathetic towards the victim and when they see the facial expressions of the victim when something happens the audience feel even more scared and engaged into finding out what will happen next and if the victim will be safe and survive. This will be used to make the audience feel as they are in the characters shoes and feel the same feelings and emotions that the victim is feeling which would end up making the experience more enjoyable and thrilling for the audience.
My inspiration of tense sounds and eery music throughout the opening sequence of my thriller was inspired by the film, Saw 1; Reverse Bear Trap. This element creates suspense and tension for the audience intriguing them into wanting to watch more and find out what is going to happen next. The tense sounds and music make the audience feel as they are in the film and help them experience the danger and suspense for themselves. This will be used so that the audience will not be bored and will be on edge from the elements of suspense, shock and surprise that has been built into wanting to watch the rest of the film and make the experience more enjoyable for them.
When we are making our group storyboard we will need to all look at each others individual storyboards and note the strengths and weaknesses of each members storyboards. We will then all discuss what we think is really good about each members and what can be improved on to make it even better to add into the group storyboard. Then as a group we will take the best ideas and put it forward for our group storyboard however we can then have the best ideas from each individual storyboard and mix them together to produce a final group storyboard with ideas from every group member. The specific ideas i want the group to put into the group storyboard from my individual storyboard are; the location and lighting of each frame. I also want the group to include some of the the editing techniques such as; handheld and Kuleshov. However, most importantly i would like the group to include my ideas of the flashbacks occurring each time the victim sees something on the floor, in the isolated house she is being kept hostage in, that triggers memories of how and maybe the reason why she is being kept hostage in the first place.
In conclusion, i think that my storyboard has a very interesting and thrilling narrative that the audience will enjoy and engage to very quickly wanting to find out more and what would happen to the victim and especially how the victim got into that situation in the first place. However, i think that my individual storyboard can be improved with the help of my group as some of the narrative of the flashback may be a bit confusing and not clear for the audience so my group can help me identify the issue properly and resolve it by changing it around a little bit to make it more understandable and intriguing for the audience. Planning my individual storyboard has been extremely helpful in regards of filming my sequence as it was a very clear and useful way of me planning my own ideas and narrative to put down on paper in a very quick and easy method to show my group, for us to all see and understand and build on as a team to make the best group narrative to make the audiences experience of watching our opening thriller sequence a very joyful experience.

You have provided a very sound and well thought out analysis of your storyboard, explaining what your sequence will consist of and giving examples of micro-elements used at different stages. However, you have not always given specific examples of when these techniques will be used or referred to specific terminology.
ReplyDeleteYou need to:
1) Make sure you specifically state when each micro-element mentioned will be used and why, and refer to the correct terminology (sound - eerie music)
2) Double check SPAG
