Planning individual narrative
The purpose of a narrative is to inform and entertain an audience by telling them a story. Different words are scripted together to give information about characters and an event in the story. Narratives engage the audience by interesting them in what is going on and what is happening to different characters throughout the movie sequence.
My idea for the narrative in my very own 2 minute thriller opening sequence is based on cyber-bullying. In the opening sequence it will show a young girl watching an embarrassing video of herself that has been posted on social media then she receives a disturbing anonymous message warning her about her death that is going to happen very soon.
I would be using the 5 elements of Mise-en-Scene in my opening sequence. The setting would be a dark room that is portrayed as the bedroom of the young girl that receives the message and the iconography would be a laptop that the girl would receive the message on. These would be realistic which would make the audience understand it more as they all have clearly been in a bedroom before and a laptop. The facial expression of the young character would be shocked and scared and her positioning would be facing the camera so that we can see her facial expression to see how scared she is. The lighting and colour of the room would be low-key lighting so it would give the setting a spooky atmosphere so the audience build a relationship with the character as they would feel sympathy towards her because they would feel the mood she is feeling which would be frightened. The costume my character would be wearing would be a white costume to show the purity and innocents of the girl which would make the audience feel more sympathetic towards her and wonder why she is a victim. This is conventional to the thriller genre as it engages the audience more into the sequence which would lead them into wanting to watch the rest of the film.
There will only be one character seen in the opening sequence and that would be the innocent girl being cyber-bullied. This character would be a girl (Sasha) so that she will be portrayed as vulnerable and weak to the audience. This is conventional to the thriller genre as it builds a relationship with the audience and character as they feel more sympathy towards her and feel more scared as she is innocent but the fact that she is a girl makes her look weaker and makes the audience assume she is going to get hurt badly.
The thriller conventions i would be using in my opening sequence would be; suspense, tense music, handheld camera, tension, low key lighting, enigma and long pauses. I will use all these conventions because they are all led into each other and they will engage the audience more into wanting to find out what is going to happen in the rest of the film. This is conventional to a thriller as it makes the relationship between the character and the audience stronger as they feel more engaged into the opening sequence so whatever occurs they would feel shocked because of the suspense being built by the low key lighting, enigma, long pauses, handheld camera and tense music.
To make my narrative conventional i am going to have a female victim wearing white. This will make her look pure and vulnerable to the audience which would lead to her being portrayed as an easy target to the killer. This is conventional to the thriller genre as it builds a relationship between the audience and the character as they feel sympathetic towards her and are frightened for her as they know she is in danger and she did not do anything wrong to be hurt.
My opening sequence will appeal to my target audience as it will engage them because it is based on a mystical murder taken place on a computer which is realistic to the target audience as most of them use computers. I am going to share this with my group by comparing the strengths and weaknesses of all the narratives and discuss if we can make it any better or even add the narratives together and make a brilliant one including all the group members ideas of their own narratives.
This post demonstrates an imaginative idea for a new thriller sequence. It is clear to see your knowledge and understanding of what the conventions of a thriller are, as you have considered a conventional narrative.
